Frame damage is a safety issue β€” not just a cosmetic one.

A vehicle with unrepaired or improperly repaired frame damage does not perform as designed in a future collision. Crumple zones, airbag trigger points, and structural rigidity all depend on the frame being within manufacturer tolerances. "Close enough" is not good enough when it comes to structural integrity.

Frame Straightening in Southern Maine

The shop that can handle whatever happened.

Not every collision repair shop in Maine is equipped for serious structural work. Frame straightening requires specialized pulling equipment, a precise computer measuring system, and technicians trained to read and interpret manufacturer-specific frame data. Without all three, a "frame repair" is guesswork.

At Weirs Collision Center, we've been handling structural damage since 1960. Our computer-based measuring system takes hundreds of measurement points across your vehicle and compares them against the manufacturer's published specifications for your exact make and model β€” so we know exactly what needs to move, and by how much, before we touch the frame.

Whether you drive a unibody sedan, a full-frame pickup, or an aluminum-intensive modern vehicle, we have the equipment and certifications to restore your vehicle's structure correctly. Serving Arundel, Kennebunk, Biddeford, Saco, Wells, and all of York County.

Types of Structural Damage

We handle the full spectrum of frame damage.

Structural damage comes in many forms. Our measuring system and pulling equipment are designed to address all of them β€” from subtle misalignment to severe collision deformation.

πŸš—
Front-End Structural Damage

Head-on and front-quarter collisions frequently push the engine cradle, front rails, and strut towers out of alignment. We measure and restore all front structural elements to spec before any body or mechanical work begins.

Most common
πŸ”„
Diagonal / Diamond Damage

When a vehicle is struck at an angle, the frame can twist diagonally β€” called "diamond" damage. One corner of the vehicle is pushed forward or back relative to the opposite corner. This requires simultaneous multi-point pulling to correct.

Requires measuring system
πŸ“
Side-Sway Damage

Side-impact collisions can push the entire frame laterally off center. Side-sway damage affects wheel alignment, door gaps, and suspension geometry. Computer measurement is the only reliable way to detect and correct it.

Side impact
↕️
Sag & Mash Damage

High-speed frontal impacts compress the frame longitudinally (mash) or cause the center section to drop vertically (sag). Both types affect suspension pickup points and require precise pulling in the correct vector to restore geometry.

Rear Structural Damage

Rear-end collisions at significant speed can damage rear rails, the spare tire well, fuel tank mounts, and rear suspension geometry. We measure and restore rear structural components to OEM specification.

Aluminum Structural Repair

Aluminum-intensive vehicles like the Ford F-150 require specialized tools, dedicated workspaces, and I-CAR aluminum repair certification β€” because aluminum cannot be repaired with the same techniques as steel. We hold that certification.

Know Your Vehicle

Unibody vs. full frame β€” what's the difference?

The type of frame your vehicle has determines the approach to structural repair. We handle both β€” with the correct equipment and procedures for each.

● Most Common Today
Unibody Construction
Sedans, SUVs, crossovers, most modern vehicles

In a unibody vehicle, the body and frame are a single welded structure. There is no separate frame underneath β€” the floor, pillars, and rocker panels all contribute to structural integrity. Damage to any of these areas is structural damage.

  • Measuring system maps hundreds of points across the body structure
  • Pulling performed at factory-designated structural anchor points
  • Sectioning (replacing damaged structural sections) performed per OEM guidelines
  • Aluminum unibody vehicles require dedicated tools and contamination prevention
● Trucks & Body-On-Frame
Full Frame Construction
Pickup trucks, heavy SUVs, commercial vehicles

Full-frame vehicles have a separate ladder-style frame under the body. The frame carries the load and provides the primary structural protection in a collision. Frame damage on a truck is often more severe than it appears from the outside.

  • Frame rails, crossmembers, and mounting points measured to spec
  • Pulling equipment anchors to frame for high-force corrections
  • Suspension and drivetrain geometry verified after structural correction
  • Aluminum frame trucks (e.g., Ford F-150) require I-CAR aluminum certification
How We Do It

From measurement to manufacturer spec.

Every structural repair at Weirs follows the same disciplined process β€” measure first, pull to spec, verify, then build back on top.

1
Damage Assessment & Teardown

Before any measurements are taken, damaged body panels and components are removed to expose the structural damage underneath. Collision damage is frequently more extensive than the exterior suggests β€” full teardown ensures we see everything before writing the repair plan.

Full disassembly Insurance documented
2
Computer Measurement Baseline

Our computerized measuring system captures the current position of key structural reference points across your vehicle. These measurements are compared against the manufacturer's published data for your exact make, model, and year β€” giving us a precise map of what needs to move and by how much.

Computer measuring system OEM reference data Documented baseline
3
Structural Pulling & Correction

The vehicle is secured to the frame bench and controlled pulling force is applied at the correct vector and anchor points to move the damaged structure back toward spec. The measuring system monitors in real time β€” we pull, measure, adjust, and pull again until the numbers match the manufacturer's tolerance.

Frame bench anchoring Real-time measurement Multi-point pulling
4
Structural Sectioning (If Required)

When a structural section is too severely damaged to pull back into specification, it must be replaced. We section and replace damaged structural components using OEM-approved procedures β€” including correct weld placement, weld type, and corrosion protection. No shortcuts that compromise the repair's long-term integrity.

OEM sectioning procedures Correct weld specs Corrosion protection
5
Post-Repair Verification Measurement

Once structural work is complete, we run the full measurement protocol again β€” verifying that every reference point is within manufacturer tolerances before we move on to body, paint, or mechanical work. The post-repair measurement report is documented and available for your records.

Full re-measurement Documented report Tolerance verified
6
Suspension, Alignment & Body Build-Back

With the structure confirmed correct, we rebuild β€” reinstalling suspension components, verifying alignment geometry, then proceeding through body repair and PPG refinish. ADAS sensors and safety systems are recalibrated after any structural repair that may affect their positioning. Lifetime warranty issued at delivery.

OEM Certified Structural Repair

Your manufacturer's procedures. Not a guess.

Every vehicle manufacturer publishes specific repair procedures for structural damage β€” including where to anchor during pulling, what sections can be replaced vs. straightened, how welds must be made, and what tolerances define a correct repair. Following these procedures is how you protect your vehicle's warranty and its structural integrity in a future collision.

Our 8 active OEM certifications mean our technicians are trained and tested on your specific vehicle's structural repair requirements β€” not applying generic techniques to a vehicle they've never been trained on. Combined with I-CAR Gold Class and our aluminum repair certification, we're equipped for whatever you bring in.

I-CAR Gold
Class

I-CAR Gold Class + Aluminum Repair Certification

I-CAR Gold Class requires ongoing role-specific training as vehicles evolve β€” including aluminum repair certification for today's aluminum-intensive truck and EV platforms. Fewer than 20% of U.S. shops hold Gold Class.

⚠️
Improper repair can void your vehicle warranty
OEM warranties on structural components require repairs to be performed per manufacturer procedures. A non-certified repair that deviates from OEM spec can void coverage on affected systems.
πŸ”’
Aluminum cannot be repaired like steel
Aluminum work requires dedicated tools, separate workspaces, and specific adhesives. Steel particle contamination weakens aluminum welds. Our I-CAR aluminum certification ensures the correct procedures are always followed.
πŸ“Š
Computer measurement is not optional
Frame damage cannot be accurately assessed by eye or tape measure. Tolerances that matter for safety are measured in millimeters. Without a computerized measuring system, structural work is based on approximation.

Covered by our lifetime warranty
Every structural repair at Weirs carries a lifetime warranty on workmanship and materials. If anything we repaired fails due to workmanship, we fix it β€” free β€” for as long as you own the vehicle.

Frame damage is almost always an insurance claim. We handle the whole process.

Structural repairs are typically among the largest collision claims. Weirs files directly with your insurer, manages the adjuster relationship, submits supplemental claims when hidden damage is discovered during teardown (and it almost always is), and ensures the repair is fully funded to OEM spec β€” not cut short by the insurer's preferred cost targets.

You choose where your vehicle is repaired. Maine law prohibits your insurance company from requiring you to use a specific shop. We'll make sure your claim covers the repair it actually takes β€” not the cheapest version of it. Learn more about insurance claims ›

Common Questions

Frame straightening FAQ.

Is my car totaled if the frame is damaged?
Not necessarily. A vehicle is typically declared a total loss when the cost of repair exceeds a certain percentage of the vehicle's actual cash value β€” usually 70–80%, depending on the insurer and state. Frame damage is repairable in most cases. Whether it pencils out as a repair vs. a total depends on the severity of the damage and the vehicle's value. We can assess the damage and provide an estimate to help you and your insurer make that determination. Many vehicles with frame damage are repaired successfully every day.
Is a car safe to drive after frame repair?
Yes β€” when the repair is done correctly. A vehicle restored to manufacturer specifications using proper procedures and verified with a computer measuring system is structurally equivalent to its pre-damage condition. The critical phrase is "done correctly." A frame repair that leaves the structure outside of manufacturer tolerances is not safe. Our process β€” computer measurement, OEM procedures, post-repair verification β€” is specifically designed to ensure the vehicle meets manufacturer safety specifications before it leaves our shop.
How do I know if my car has frame damage after a collision?
Common signs include uneven panel gaps (doors, hood, or trunk that don't line up as they did before), the vehicle pulling to one side while driving straight, unusual tire wear developing after the accident, creaking or new noises from the body structure, or visible buckling in the floor, firewall, or rocker panels. However, frame damage is not always visible or felt β€” the only reliable way to determine whether structural damage is present is a computer measurement. We recommend any vehicle involved in a significant collision be measured, even if the damage appears minor from the outside.
Does frame damage affect my car's resale value?
Yes β€” prior frame damage is disclosed on Carfax and similar history reports and does affect resale value regardless of repair quality. However, a properly documented, OEM-compliant structural repair by a certified shop is far less impactful on value than frame damage left unrepaired, and is significantly better than a repair that was done incorrectly. We provide full documentation of the repair process, including pre- and post-repair measurements, which gives future buyers and dealers confidence in the quality of the work.
Will my insurance cover frame straightening?
Yes β€” frame damage from a collision is covered under comprehensive or collision coverage, and under the at-fault party's liability coverage if someone else caused the accident. We work directly with all major carriers and handle the entire claims process on your behalf. We also submit supplemental claims when hidden structural damage is discovered during teardown β€” which is common in significant collision repairs. You pay your deductible; we handle everything else.
What's the difference between frame straightening and frame replacement?
Frame straightening uses pulling equipment to move damaged structural metal back to its original position β€” appropriate when the metal can be corrected without compromising its structural properties. Frame sectioning or replacement involves cutting out a damaged structural section and welding in a new piece β€” required when damage is too severe to straighten, or when the manufacturer's repair procedures require replacement rather than repair. We assess each case individually and follow the OEM's guidance on which approach is appropriate for your vehicle and the specific damage present.
