Know Before You Tint

Maine window tint laws at a glance.

Maine has specific rules for how dark your tint can be โ€” and where. We know them cold. Every install we do is compliant with Maine law.

๐ŸชŸ
Windshield
Top 5" only
Non-reflective tint permitted above the AS-1 line (top 5 inches). No tint below that line โ€” period.
๐Ÿš—
Front Side Windows
35% VLT minimum
Must allow more than 35% of light to pass through. This is the driver and front passenger windows.
Additional Maine rules: Tint must not be more reflective than standard glass. No red, yellow, or amber tint permitted on any window. We verify compliance on every vehicle before installation โ€” no surprises at your next inspection.
Why Tint

More than looks โ€” real, measurable benefits.

Window tinting isn’t just about aesthetics. It’s one of the most cost-effective upgrades you can make to protect your vehicle’s interior and improve everyday comfort.

โ˜€๏ธ
UV Protection

Quality window film blocks up to 99% of UV-A and UV-B radiation. That protects your skin during daily driving โ€” and protects your interior from fading, cracking, and discoloration. Dashboard, seats, and trim all last longer behind good film.

99%UV blocked (ceramic film)
๐ŸŒก๏ธ
Heat Reduction

Window film โ€” especially ceramic film โ€” rejects infrared heat, keeping your interior significantly cooler on hot days. That means less reliance on A/C, better fuel efficiency, and a more comfortable car from the moment you get in.

Up to 60%Heat rejection (ceramic film)
๐Ÿ”’
Privacy & Security

Rear and side tint limits visibility into your vehicle โ€” reducing the temptation for smash-and-grab theft. Film also holds shattered glass together on impact, reducing injury risk and keeping glass fragments contained if a window breaks.

๐ŸŒŸ
Glare Reduction

Tinted windows reduce sun and headlight glare โ€” making driving more comfortable and reducing eye fatigue on long drives. Particularly noticeable on Maine’s eastward morning commutes and low-angle winter sun.

๐Ÿ›‹๏ธ
Interior Preservation

UV and heat are the primary causes of interior fading and cracking over time. Tinting significantly extends the life of your seats, dashboard, and carpeting โ€” protecting your vehicle’s resale value in the process.

โœจ
Appearance Upgrade

A clean, even tint job gives any vehicle a sharper, more finished look. Done right, it enhances the vehicle’s lines without looking aftermarket or uneven. We install with precision โ€” no bubbles, gaps, or finger lifts.

Shade Options

Choose your VLT level.

VLT (Visible Light Transmission) is the percentage of light that passes through the film. Lower percentage = darker tint. Here’s how each level looks, performs, and fits Maine law.

50%
Light Tint
Subtle โ€” barely noticeable from outside
Provides meaningful UV protection and glare reduction while keeping the natural appearance of your glass. Popular for windshield visor strips and front windows on vehicles where a factory look is desired.
โœ“ Legal all windows
35%
Medium Tint
The legal limit for Maine front windows
The most popular shade for front side windows โ€” noticeably darker than factory glass, good heat and UV rejection, and right at Maine’s legal threshold for the driver and front passenger windows. A strong all-around choice.
โœ“ Legal all windowsMost popular front
20%
Dark Tint
Dark, private, high heat rejection
Excellent heat and UV rejection, strong privacy, and a very finished appearance. In Maine, this shade is legal on rear side windows and the rear window. Not legal on front side windows. A common full-vehicle look is 35% front, 20% rear.
Most popular rearRear windows only (ME)
15%
Very Dark Tint
Maximum privacy on rear glass
Near-opaque from outside in daylight, very high heat and UV rejection. Legal on rear side windows and rear window in Maine. Popular for SUVs, trucks, and vehicles where rear cargo privacy matters. Dual side mirrors required if applied to rear window.
Rear windows only (ME)
5%
Limo Tint
Nearly opaque โ€” maximum privacy
The darkest option available. Essentially opaque from outside during the day. Legal only on rear side windows and the rear window in Maine. Often used on SUVs, commercial vehicles, and when maximum cargo or passenger privacy is the goal.
Rear windows only (ME)
Film Technology

Not all window film is the same.

The darkness you choose is one decision. The film type is another โ€” and it has a bigger impact on performance than shade alone.

Entry Level๐ŸชŸ
Dyed Film

The most affordable option. A layer of dye absorbs some solar energy and reduces visible light. Provides basic privacy and glare reduction, modest UV protection.

  • Good privacy and appearance
  • Basic UV protection
  • Limited heat rejection (absorbs, doesn’t reflect)
  • May fade over time in high-UV environments
  • Most budget-friendly option
Mid-Rangeโšก
Carbon Film

Carbon particles give this film better heat rejection than dyed film without the metallic look or signal interference of metalized film. Good all-around performer at a mid-range price.

  • Better heat rejection than dyed film
  • Matte, non-reflective appearance
  • No signal interference (GPS, cell, radio)
  • Good UV protection
  • More fade-resistant than dyed

Common Questions

Window tinting FAQ.

What is the legal tint limit in Maine?
Maine law requires front side windows (driver and front passenger) to allow more than 35% of light to pass through โ€” meaning 35% VLT is the darkest legal tint for those windows. Rear side windows and the rear window have no darkness restriction and can be any shade. The windshield can only be tinted with non-reflective film above the AS-1 line (top 5 inches). No red, yellow, or amber tint is permitted on any window, and tint cannot be more reflective than standard glass. If you tint the rear window, Maine requires functional dual side mirrors.
Will window tint interfere with my GPS, cell signal, or radar detector?
It depends on the film type. Metalized and some older dyed films can interfere with radio signals, GPS, and cell reception because the metallic particles reflect RF signals. Ceramic film does not have this problem โ€” it uses non-conductive ceramic nanoparticles that reject heat and UV without blocking radio frequencies. If you rely on GPS, use a radar detector, or have a newer vehicle with embedded antennas in the glass, ceramic film is the right choice.
How long does window tint last?
Quality film professionally installed can last 10 years or more. The main factors are film quality (ceramic outlasts dyed) and installation quality. Cheap dyed films may begin to fade, bubble, or turn purple within 3–5 years, especially in high-UV environments. Ceramic films maintain their performance and appearance significantly longer. All of our tint work is covered by a lifetime warranty โ€” if the film fails due to workmanship or manufacturing defect, we address it.
Can window tint be removed if I change my mind?
Yes โ€” window film can be removed by a professional. The process involves heat to soften the adhesive and careful peeling to avoid damaging the glass defroster lines (on rear windows especially). It is not a DIY-friendly job if you want to preserve the defroster grid. If you need tint removed โ€” whether it was done elsewhere and is failing, or you’re changing shades โ€” we can help.
How long do I have to wait before rolling my windows down after tinting?
We recommend waiting 48–72 hours before rolling your windows down after installation. The film adhesive needs time to fully cure and bond to the glass. Rolling the window down too soon can disturb the edge of the film before the adhesive has set, potentially causing the edge to lift. In cold weather, the cure time may be slightly longer. We’ll give you specific guidance based on conditions at the time of your installation.
Is ceramic tint worth the extra cost over regular film?
For most daily drivers, yes. The heat rejection difference is significant โ€” ceramic film can reject up to 60% of infrared heat compared to around 40% for good carbon film and much less for dyed film. On a hot Maine summer day, that translates to a noticeably cooler interior and less A/C load. Ceramic also lasts longer, won’t interfere with signals, won’t fade or purple, and looks cleaner. If you plan to keep the vehicle for several years, the additional upfront cost typically pays for itself in comfort and longevity.
